Completely Off Topic

One of the reasons I started this blog is due to school! I am a grad student in the field of Instructional Design and Technologies and I needed a project that was unique and could improve the lives of everyday people. After consulting with my advisor she thought this was an excellent project and this website/ blog was born.

I recently found out via my Mother that my sister and sister in law have viewed this page! So HI! sister and sister in law! So I felt I should explain that this is a portion of my graduation project.

I am feeling special!

First of all, you my readers make me feel special I have 14 subscribers! That makes me feel GREAT! When I started this blog I didn't think anyone would read it! I thought that people would think I was insane for my love of FREE, getting things in the mail and the fun of hunting down a bargain.

Also, I have talked a few times to Gary from the Dollar Stretcher, where he mentioned me on his blog. He wants to link to me AGAIN with a few tips about emailing companies!

This means I really need to work on my mail because the only thing I received today was a FREE issue of Cosmo magazine.

I also received a $5.00 Amazon e-certificate from SwagBucks via email yesterday.

The Great Rebate Debate

Please look at the upper right side of my blog. As a lot of you may know I am attempting to keep track of all the of the income I earn from non-work related sources. That I detail in a google spread sheet that can be found here. My husband and I were discussing this issue last night. He views rebates money saved, which I don't keep track of yet. I am not quite sure where to categorize it because I am just starting to do rebates. So if you could be so kind leave a comment with your thoughts and vote in the poll.

Thursday and Friday

Sorry ladies and gents I wasn't able to get online yesterday due to major power outages in our area. We didn't have power from 3am until 11pm due to Wind storms. Which is not a bargain when you can't cook, but so delicious! My husband I are not fans of chain restaurants, we prefer to support local privately owned companies when we go out. We feel that is a great way to support our community and the food is usually more amazing than any chain.

A typical meal for free

A lot of you may wonder what we eat and if it is completely healthy. Honestly since I have started using coupons and emailing companies I have found that we eat MUCH healthier!

This is a typical meal for us.

1. Pop eye Fresh, Dole's Salad or Fresh Express salad acquired through FREE or doubled coupons.
2. Eggland's Best hard boiled eggs on the salad from a coupon for FREE eggs.
3. Pilgrim's Pride Chicken Tenders, grilled on top of the salad acquired through a FREE coupon.
4. Ken's Dressing that was acquired by using a free coupon.
5. Free Pepperidge Farm or Cole's Garlic Bread from using doubled coupons, high value coupons or free product coupons.
6. Diet Ice Tea obtain for $0.36 using a Catalina from the Ragu deal that yielded me 31 jars for $7.00
7. Sargento's, Kraft or Helluva Good Cheese also on the salad that was obtained for FREE using coupons and Catalinas

This can be you too for just a few minutes of your time each day!

The first thing you should do is set a goal of how many companies you want to email a day. Five is a great goal for beginners. The next step is to make a list of what companies you want to email. I have complied a list of 699+ companies that can be found here, and is easy to use. You can either download it into an excel document or import into another Google document for yourself. If you are looking for a particular company using Firefox go to Edit and then Find. A box on the bottom on the browser will appear. Then just type in the name of the company or product and click on next and it will highlight what you are looking for.

Writing companies is simple as well. The most important thing is to tell the truth. Don't make up complaints and definately don't follow in the footsteps of the 39 dollar experiment guy, begging for free stuff. Tell the company what you truely think of their products and if you haven't tried it tell them you haven't! I have recieved several free coupons for telling them that I am interested in trying their product and would like to know where to find it. Amy's Organic sent quite a few coupons when I said I would like to try their products but wasn't quit sure of them because I didn't know anyone who had tried them.

These are a few key factors to include when you write a letter to a company.

  1. State the name of the product
  2. If you have tried the product or would like to try the product
  3. Where you buy the product or ask for a location
  4. What you like about the product
  5. Insert something personal, like if you can't wait to share an item with your child.
  6. Include your postal address
  7. Keep it short and to the point.

Mail Today- 2/11/2009

  1. $5.00 check from NDPOR SWEEPLAND
  2. 1 coupon for FREE Cole's Garlic Bread and 2 $0.30 off coupons
  3. 3 Packets of Yogi Tea and one $0.50 off Yogi tea

Each of these contain good coupons and a coupon for free dishwasher rinse!
  1. 1 set of Coupons from Lowes a 10/50 and a 25/250 coupon.

Repost and the things I have earned.

A few people have asked what I have written to companies. I wrote a blog entry in the beginning to this blog with a few tips. It is located here and I have learned quite a few things in the process.

  1. UPS will always come when you take a shower in the middle of the day and forget to bring clothes into the bathroom accross the house. If you are waiting for a package this is sure fire way to trigger it to come. It often results in hiding until you are sure the truck has left and then a run through the house to find clothes.
  2. Companies often don't tell you they are sending something, they like to surprise you.
  3. Companies also like to get a thank you email when they sending you something free, it often results in being remembered by them in a good way.
  4. It only takes a few minutes a day to email companies
  5. Walmart is usually the most stressful place when you are redeeming coupons. If you do it in Johnstown. The other Walmarts in the area are better staffed and cheaper than Johnstown.
  6. The companies usually have cycles of when they will send you coupons again. Sending up Google Calendar to remind you is wonderful!
  7. Even bargain hunters are surprised I get so many good coupons for complimenting companies! I hardly ever complain
  8. Karma pays off. If you have a good experience at a store call and compliment the staff, they appreciate it in an often Thankless job.
  9. More on Karma. Sometimes I randomly have coupons sent to my inlaws or parents. I ask the companies to send to them and explain its my parents or inlaws and they don't use computers often. I haven't told them its me having coupons sent to them. My Mother has figured it out, my Mother in Law has not ;) Shh... Brother and Sister in laws if you are reading!
  10. If there are coupons I am not going to use I often do a Random Act of Kindness or RAOK . If I have the address of someone and know they use a product I randomly send it to people. Especially formula coupons !
  11. Little Surveys add up and if you earn less than $600 dollars per year from a single source you don't need to claim it!
Example it is the first half of February and I have already earned more than I would
have when I was a Catholic High School teacher.

12. Lastly I don't know how I would survive with out Google Documents!
I do however think I am naturally dependent on technology due to my
choosen field, Instructional Design and Technologies. Google
Documents keeps every aspect of my life organized!

I feel Special!

The Dollar Stretcher mentioned me, by name!

Great Amazon Example

Diapers are a necessary thing when you have a baby! I am cheap but definitely not dedicated to use cloth like some others! Though when you buy diapers my way it may be cheaper than cloth diapers. I earn gift cards for Amazon via the links on the right and enter them into my account. I save even more by using the subscribe and save feature with promotional codes.

This is what my order looks like for the diapers!

Items Ordered Price
1 of: Pampers Cruisers Diapers, Size 4 (22-37 Lbs), Value Pack, 100 Cruisers [Health and Beauty]

Sam's isn't always cheaper!

Today we went to Altoona to go to Sam's Club and Target. Then we stopped at the Ebensburg Walmart to see if it was better than the Johnstown Walmart. We were pleasantly surprised, the staff is wonderful and friendly!

Since Altoona is about 45 minutes from our home we take time to prepare a list and coupons before we go. This worked out to our advantage this time. We went to the Sam's Club website and made our shopping list. Then we printed it out to bring to Target to compare prices.

We spent more at Target than I have been accustom to spending lately, but it was all needed items.

Target

Huggies Wipes from the Trial Size Department were Clearanced to $0.48
I used a $1.00 off Kimberly Clark coupon valid on Huggies
That resulted in overage of $0.52

Earth's Best Sticks were $1.77
I used a coupon for $0.55

The total $1.22

Two Clorox Wipe Packs from The Trial Size Section $0.99
Clorox Wipe Packs from The Trial Size Section $0.99
The total for two packs $1.98
I used a 1.50 off any two Clorox Coupon which made the total $0.48

The best Deal by far was Kashi TLC SOFT CEREAL BARS they are one price cut to $2.75 at Target, there regular price is a little over 3.00 at Target and almost $6.00 for the same box at Giant Eagle!

I had 5 coupons from the Vocal Point Mailers. So I paid $0.75 per box!

We also found that All Free and Clear was cheaper per load at Target when using a $1.00 off coupon than Sam's club. The same also applied to Charmin, Tidy Cat Scoop and Glad Force Flex Garbage bags.

I saved even more by using a gift card I earned from the Mill's Panel for taking a phone survey. So watch your phones they call you too!

Walmart

Walmart was also better than expected because I had a few coupons for free items. I bought 8 items and only paid $6.29 thanks to the fact I email companies regularly!

The items that I had free coupons for were:
  1. Dr. Pepper
  2. Pilgrim's Pride Chicken Tenders
  3. Buding Lunch Meat
  4. Buding Lunch Meat
  5. Fisher Boy Fish Sticks
  6. Clorox Bleach
  7. Delmonte No Salt Added Tomatoes.

The Fisher boy was Free up to $3.99, so I had to pay the difference because the bag was $7.99 and of course I had to get Ice Tea. Overall it was a pretty good trip!

You may wonder what I do with those lovely $2.00 off your next purchase Catalinas from Bilo. Well I combine them into other deals or use them for things we need.

Today I did this.

Thomas was 2 for $5.00
I used 2 $1.00 off Thomas
Then 1 $2.00 off Catalina

I paid $1.00 for two things of Thomas products

The next transaction I bought Ice Tea at $2.36
I used a catalina for $2.00

So I paid $1.36 for 2 things of Thomas and once Gallon of Galikeers Ice tea

What do you do with Expired coupons?

I send them to the military of course! At the end of each month I pull all the expired coupons and put them in an envelope and send them off the a military base. You see they are allowed to use expire coupons at their Commissary store and since we all know they are not paid nearly enough for what they do it helps a GREAT CAUSE.

Here a few places where you can send your expired coupons.
